The planner produces a tight schedule every Friday. On paper, 675 of the next week's 800 available crew hours are committed to specific jobs. By the following Friday, just 482 hours of that scheduled work are done. The rest was swallowed by emergencies, by jobs that ran long, and by work that somehow never started.

Without a compliance figure, that shortfall stays invisible until deadlines slip or the backlog starts to swell. With it, you get a weekly signal that something is pulling the crew off plan.

What it actually measures

Schedule compliance in hours is the percentage of your total available craft hours that were spent completing work that was on the schedule. It measures how faithfully the crew worked to the plan, not merely how busy they were, which are very different things. A crew can be flat out all week and still post poor compliance if most of that effort went to jobs that were never on the plan.

How to work it out

Schedule compliance, hours (%) = (Scheduled work performed × 100) / Total available hours

Twenty workers at 8 hours a day for 5 days give 800 available hours. Of those, 675 were scheduled, and 482 hours of scheduled work were actually completed.

Schedule compliance = (482 × 100) / 800 = 60.3%

At 60%, a great deal of the week went somewhere other than the plan. The next question, how many of those hours were lost to reactive work, points straight at where to look.

The denominator that makes or breaks it

There is one mistake that quietly turns this metric into a comforting lie, and it is worth stating plainly: the denominator must be every available craft hour, not just the hours that happened to be scheduled. Divide completed scheduled work by scheduled hours alone and a crew can post ninety per cent while half its time vanished into unplanned work, because those unplanned hours were never in the sum. Measured against all available hours, the figure tells the truth, that a real chunk of paid capacity went somewhere other than the plan. There is a small, sensible convention on the other side of the fraction: a scheduled job the crew genuinely started in the week is usually given the benefit of the doubt and counted as compliant, since the commitment was honoured even if the work spilled over.

Why it is the truest measure of control

Schedule compliance has a fair claim to being the single most telling number in maintenance, because it answers the question lying underneath all the others: who is in charge here, the plan or the plant? When the workforce controls the equipment, it sets a schedule and keeps it. When the equipment controls the workforce, the schedule breaks every week, and compliance stays low no matter how hard anyone works. That is why it tracks so closely with proactivity, and why it drops the moment reactive work rises.

What good looks like

Best-in-class is greater than 90%, though it is best understood as an aspiration rather than a hard pass-fail line; respected practitioners treat anywhere from 85 to 90 per cent as a perfectly acceptable working band. One caution matters more than the number, though. Schedule compliance is not entirely within the crew's control: operations may not release the equipment, parts may fail to arrive, a genuine emergency may rightly take priority. Used as a diagnostic, it is invaluable, since a low week opens a useful conversation about what got in the way. Used as a hammer in performance reviews, it teaches people to pad the schedule, under-commit and game the score until it means nothing. The best plants call it schedule success and treat a miss as a shared problem to solve, not a stick to swing.

Where it can mislead you

  • The denominator is every available hour, not just scheduled ones. Leave the unscheduled hours out and compliance reads far higher than reality.
  • A high compliance number can sit beside low real productivity if the schedule was too light to begin with. Read it next to planned backlog and reactive work.
  • This is the hours-based half of schedule compliance; its partner counts work orders. Use the two together.
  • It is not fully under the crew's control, so investigate a low figure rather than punishing it; the cause is often upstream of the technicians entirely.

Schedule compliance in hours answers a plain and important question: is your crew's time being spent the way you planned, or is it being quietly consumed by interruptions? It is the difference between a schedule that runs the week and a schedule that gets run over by it, and watching it climb is one of the surest signs that a plant is taking back control of its own time.
